Ryan tells us about his apprenticeship journey through 2018/19
What apprenticeship did you do?
I was recruited to Virgin Care in 2018 as an apprentice on the Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner programme.
What did you gain from it?
I feel I gained confidence as a person inside and outside of the workplace. This came from learning through the apprenticeship programme the best way to deal with challenging scenarios such as conflicting deadlines. It helped me with managing stress and improving organisation.
When I first joined, I knew my own role yet very little about the structure of the organisation. The apprenticeship gave me a great overview of this. It also gave me time out from day to day work to assess different situations and consolidate learnings.
What were your career aspirations?
Since college, I knew I wanted to work in HR. The apprenticeship allowed me to get a better overview of the entire Human Resources function. Part of it was the opportunity to shadow different teams to find out what they do and how they work.
All of this helped me decide which team I wanted to work in and what knowledge I needed to be able to reach the next step in my career.
Throughout the apprenticeship, Deena Thompson and manager Megan Griffith supported and encouraged me and gave me plenty of opportunities to learn and develop.
I really appreciated this and worked hard for the assessment. It was worth it. I was really pleased to hear I received a distinction.
I grew to be a vital member of my team with a good understanding of how different teams and processes interlink. With this knowledge, I am able to come up with innovative ideas on how to become more efficient. This is a direct result of doing the apprenticeship.
How are you getting on in your career?
The apprenticeship helped me gain a permanent position in Virgin Care as People Hub Administrator.
I now have a new role in the recruitment team as a Recruitment Assistant – I started this yesterday (3 February 2020), so it’s brand new to me and it’s going really well.
In this role I will be providing support to the recruitment advisers, managing social media accounts such as Virgin Care careers, responding to emails from potential recruits and doing project work.
I feel I wouldn’t have been able to achieve this without the apprenticeship scheme.
Would you recommend doing an apprenticeship?
Yes. I completed the Customer Service Practitioner Level 2 Apprenticeship last year and I do feel that taking on this apprenticeship opened doors for me.
It allowed me to explore different roles and shadow different teams giving me clarity in in what I wanted to do with my career. I decided recruitment was for me and that’s the team I’m in now.
Doing the apprenticeship was the best decision I have made. I have been able to earn while I learn and have gained priceless workplace experience in a role and team which has been brilliant.
